UAP Survey and Recon of the 1947 US Atomic Capability
Opening
Between June 1, 1947 and July 31, 1947 there were 850 different sightings of UFO’s, now called UAP’s. The vast majority of these sightings were chronicled by the newspapers of the day, meaning that when someone saw a UFO and the newspaper liked their story, they published an account of it. Essentially, UFO’s entered the US mainstream during that summer. The number of published reports jumped dramatically after Kenneth Arnold’s sighting made national headlines. The 850 cases primarily come from 140 different newspapers across 90 cities in the US and Canada. These sightings compose what is called the “summer wave of 1947.”
The most famous sighting of that summer was the June 24th sighting by Kenneth Arnold. This research doesn’t focus on Kenneth Arnold’s first sighting as an event, but rather the research focuses on the entire pantheon of the summer 1947 sightings as a collective whole. However, information about this sighting does improve context of the research.
What you will find
This article is going to conclude that the sightings of 1947 is a set of extraterrestrial machines systematically analyzing the atomic supply chain of 1947 as their primary mission. Along that means, those same disks examined the most dangerous and important military bases. The method used for these examinations was to follow railroad paths used in the transportation of nuclear materials which resulted in the examination of companies as well as government installations.
First Beginning
Let’s start at the beginning. For right now, that would be June 24, 1947. At 2:58 pm, Kenneth Arnold was flying near Mt. Rainier in his small plane and carefully observed 9 disk-shaped objects crossing his flight path. He thought they were military aircraft. During the sighting he turned his aircraft towards Mt. Adams, the same direction the UFO’s were headed. He clocked their time traveling to Mt. Adams at 1:42 seconds, and after landing a few hours later performed the math discovering that they were flying at 1700 mph, but he arbitrarily decided it was 1200 mph. By all conventional mentions of this event, his sighting “started a wave of UFO sightings in 1947.”
There are far more details to his sighting, but for now, this is what you need to know.
For more information about his sighting you can start with Wikipedia. That’s where I started.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenneth_Arnold_UFO_sighting
The Kenneth Arnold sighting has resilience for many reasons, but mostly for his acute observation. He noticed details that others simply dismissed. At this time in 1947, Arnold has over 9000 hours of flying time. While not always stated in all accounts of his sighting is the fact that he turned his aircraft towards Mount Adams attempting to follow the disks.
Kenneth Arnold, the person
As mentioned above, by all conventional standards, the Kenneth Arnold sighting started a wave of UFO sightings in 1947. That is not accurate. Kenneth Arnold was one of the most important witnesses within a set of UFO witnesses. While Arnold’s sighting is amazing, he didn’t bring the UFO’s, he doesn’t own the UFO’s, and he is not in charge of the UFO’s. Any significant sighting could have caused “the wave” to happen.
The reason why he is accredited with “starting the wave” is because of the chain reaction his sighting set off. The chain reaction occurred because Kenneth Arnold is an incredible observer. His career in 1947 deals with fire alarm installation. He flies across the Northwest for his job. He has over 9000 hours of flying. He has a durable plane made for flying in the Northwest.
His attention to detail, in my opinion, is on par with someone who must make sure that a fire alarm system is as reliable as it can be because people’s live could be in danger and lives could be lost if the system was faulty.
And because he has these skills, he fully used them during his UFO encounter and because of his details, we are still able to get a clear picture from what he saw.
But Kenneth Arnold wasn’t the only person to see disks on this day
Unbeknownst to Kenneth Arnold, there were two other people who saw at least nine disks streaking at high speed.
These 9 disks were spotted just east of Joliet which is just southwest of Chicago at 1:50 PM CDT by a Railway Engineer. The second sighting was by a man in Lone Jack, Missouri, which is just outside Kansas City, Missouri, with the disks moving directly toward Kansas City.
Unbeknownst to the above people, these weren’t the only UFO sightings that day and night.
During the 24th, there were 20 other disk sightings, most of which were in Washington.
Some of the most recognizable cities that had disks flying over included Bremerton, Bellingham, Seattle, Pasco, Boise, and Portland.
However, the most significant of the group in Washington was the 3 disk sighting near Richland, very close to the Hanford Engineering Works site. Don’t worry, Hanford is just the only Plutonium production plant in the world at this time. For all intents and purposes it is the most powerful manufacturing building in the world.
I’m not the first person to notice that disks have a connection and similarities, but I’m the first to be able to predict their routes and how the machines move based on their rigid system. I guess I should have said, spoiler alert: they’re extraterrestrial drone flying machines.
Unfortunately, the Arnold sighting demonstrates that the machines know exactly what they need to do to make their overall mission succeed.
It took me about two weeks to figure out what the disks were surveying and reconnoitering (reconning). It took me nearly six weeks from my first Kenneth Arnold reading to determine the base pattern for disk movement. Then it took me another 2 weeks or so to realize that I could use their movement principles to determine which sightings were unreliable, false, or keys to understanding the total route. It also gives indication of what else the machines surveyed and some indication of when certain recon routes stopped.
Summer wave of 1947
Unbeknownst to the people of those 20 different sightings who saw disk(s) on the 24th, there were far more sightings.
Between June 1 and July 31, there were 850 different sightings of UFO’s, now called UAP’s. The vast majority of these sightings were chronicled by the newspapers of the day, meaning that when someone saw a UFO and the newspaper liked their story, they published an account of it. The number of published reports jumped dramatically after Kenneth Arnold’s sighting made national headlines.
This blog uses the data collected from those 850 cases. I was able to find a 1947 dataset of the sightings, which detailed multiple fields of data including witnesses, their address, if known, the sighting location, disk color, speed, and even air force explanation.
I didn’t build the chronology of the cases or the data. That was already done. I did convert it to excel. I corrected spelling errors when found. I corrected street data when found to be wrong. I verified some information with the 1950 census data which became available this year. I mapped the data. I changed GMT to PST in the vast majority of cases.
While the data is available by scouring the internet, I will make it available here in the future.
What is unique about the summer of 1947 sightings is their frequency, honesty, and unmolested simplicity.
The UFO wave of 1947
As I analyzed the Kenneth Arnold sighting I found research that detailed many of the sightings. Published in 1967, the Report on the UFO wave of 1947 by Ted Bloecher, with an introduction by Dr. McDonald has proven to be far more valuable than the information about the Arnold sighting. The Report had cataloged the entire summer of UFO’s and made valuable corrections and additional notes..
I will make that report available here if I can.
The introduction of the book was by Dr. James E. McDonald, Senior Physicist, Institute of Atmospheric Physics, University of Arizona. His interviews, persistence and expertise were without equal.
The book goes into additional details on approximately 150 of the 850 cases. It groups the sightings as best that it can. It contains corrected information. In some cases, the newspaper got simple details wrong like the spelling of a persons name, the sighting location, the amount of disks seen, the color of the disks, etc.
Most newspapers of the day loved running the story of a sighting, but also ran stories that ridiculed the people who had seen the UFOs. In some cases that ridicule came from anonymous sources. Some debunkers had ridiculous explanations. There were at least two sightings where the official explanation was given as both balloon and meteorite by different explainers.
If all 850 sightings were balloons or all 850 sightings were meteorites, then those facts create other large problems. If all sightings were balloons, then more than one balloon (Roswell’s Project Mogul balloon) should have been recovered. If all 850 sightings were meteorites then it was the greatest summer of all time for a continuous meteor shower. In truth, astronomers would still be studying the amazing and unprecedented meteors that changed direction, had silver shapes, sped up and slowed down, etc. The reality is astronomers have no record of such meteors. The reality is astronomers have no record of 1947 being any more meteorite heavy than any other given year.
Purpose of Machines
I couldn’t help but notice that many sightings of 1947 were in New Mexico, near military installations. I couldn’t help but notice that many of the sightings were near military air bases.
Even before reading about that sighting, I had imagined what it would have been like for an alien race to see a recent atomic test. The aliens would immediately know the near future outcome. I also took note that the Trinity site itself would be a distinguishing site from space.
During the first two weeks of research, I began to notice that some of the machines were frequently travelling near Mountains or Volcanos. Furthermore, as I studied all 850 sightings in the summer of 1947 I began to notice the frequency of machine sightings near water.
Every time I noticed a sighting near water, it would make me giggle. In the movie “Signs” the aliens can’t touch water, and they don’t wear protective suits. And, once Earthlings in the movie figure out that weakness, we’re able to drive them away. So, in the movie Signs, the aliens have travelled millions of miles and they can’t touch water. In real life, they were near water much of the time, except in the desert. In real life it looked like the machines were tracking the water.
I took all the maps from the 1947 wave book and put them into photoshop. I layered them together to give myself a complete US map of all the sightings during that summer from June 1 to July 31, 1947. The map does not include any cases not in those original 850. This map does not include any UFO sightings outside of 1947.
Compared to the original maps produced for the Summer of 1947 book A map made with modern tools gives not only an amazing realization of the size and scope of sightings. It also gives perspective on locations important to the disks. It also shows some very clear clusters and patterns.
Personally, I could really see that the concentration in the Northwest United States didn’t just show a cluster of sightings, but also a pattern of movement. And I could see some lines of movement in the Midwest from north to south, but this quickly turned out to be wrong, and that was exciting.
I began to formulate that they were performing a reconnaissance, but also, I asked myself is this a form of foraging? Is this a form of trap-lining? I was close, but not quite right, but it led me to the right track.
Next came the most important and critical work.
I put several maps over the sightings map. It wasn’t as random as it seems, I just wanted to test various scenarios.
I had come across a list of labs in the United States that were connected to the Department of Energy. I took that map and got several matches, but it wasn’t just that I had a few matches. It seemed like several of the sites had far more sightings grouped near.
The Manhattan Project
Then I started looking up the Manhattan Project. Then I took the Manhattan Project sites: the big three, and about 30 more sites used in uranium mining, uranium processing, atomic manufacturing, etc.
To put it simply, the MP is
The MP map I had was far from complete. In addition, it was somewhat misleading. There were sites that were more important to the project, but less notable. Then there was the fact that there were far more sites involved than I had ever known, Then there was the discovery that over 100 companies had made or worked to help the project.
Then I came across a site dedicated to Manhattan Project and other nuclear sites.
It had almost every location connected to the Manhattan Project as well as every location from after the Manhattan Project ended and the Atomic Energy Commission continued.
I removed all sightings from after 1947, leaving me with a map of sites to overlay with the UFO cases.
Every single major Manhattan project site had disk sightings. Not only that, many of the Manhattan Project sites with high radioactivity had multiple visits with different disks. It was telling me that the machines had a different priority level for the sites than how we view the project sites.
Just in case I began to compare large cities and state capitals to the sightings. While Chicago had plenty of visits, Cleveland (7th largest city in the US at that time) had zero. Atlanta, Georgia had zero. In fact, most state capitals except Madison, Wisconsin had zero reported sightings.
In other words, and I’m being super-sarcastic here, people living near Manhattan Project sites always experienced the “mass hypnosis” or the meteorites in the middle of the day or the super-fast 1700 mile geese that many debunkers claimed. In fact, if you lived near an MP site then I guarantee you 100%, that you could have walked out during any day between June 1, 1947 and July 31, 1947 and seen 1,2,3,4,5, or 9 disks if you had known the right location to look.
In actuality, websites like abovetopsecret.com have great information and I did use their website to help with this research. However, debunkers of 1947 often made claims that were not only disrespectful, but downright absurd.
First overlay
What was amazing about the first overlay was the sightings of Idaho moving directly towards the Hanford Engineering Works site, which was the single most important site in the Manhattan Project.
Of course, while there was a high correlation between the 1947 atomic infrastructure, there were still huge pockets of sightings that were seemingly random, but it still looked like movement.
.
Map of all the sightings
I began to rationalize the following. That whatever algorithm was controlling the machines it was using natural terrain for its movement. Unfortunately, this idea was nowhere near how interesting a system that was used.
So, my first conclusion was that the objective of the machines was the complete reconnaissance of the Manhattan project and its sites in all ways.
That brings me to the routes and my dilemma. If the machines were following water routes like rivers and flying near mountains then this was like bird navigation. If that was true then, it would be nearly impossible for me to get an accurate reconstruction of their routing.
At least in this point, which was April, I had worked out 90% of what they were doing, and why they were doing it, but I really wanted to find their routing method. Then I got lucky. I was looking at dozens of maps and I came across a railroad map that happened to look like the trains were near water. As I explored different maps of Union Pacific and BNSF, I came across a defunct route called the “Milwaukee Road.”
It was a train route across the northwest and north central states of the US. It ran from Milwaukee across North Dakota to Montana thru the top of Idaho and down into Washington. More specifically, the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (CMStP&P), often referred to as the “Milwaukee Road” (reporting mark MILW), was a Class I railroad that operated in the Midwest and Northwest of the United States from 1847 until 1986 (Wikipedia).
What was important about this Milwaukee Road was the fact, that the railroad company in charge, the CMStP&P, had a major account during the war, that company had the contract for supplying the Hanford Engineering Works. In fact, that company built a special station just to service Hanford.
At that point, I googled every railroad map I could get my hand on. Also, I looked up information on Uranium transport during WW2.
Eventually, I found a simple map of the railroads of the United States. I took that map and other railroad maps and put them over my map of the 850 UFO cases.
Of course, trains follow rivers and, of course, almost all cities have railroads. But not all of these cities were involved in the transport of items used in the Manhattan Project. Not all of the states were involved in transport of atomic-intended parts or supplies.
This is one of the versions of that map.
As you can see a significant number of sightings occur on railroad lines and not every dot does. In some cases there is a railroad there but the map doesn’t show it. In some cases, there was a railroad there and in use in 1947, but it has been abandoned.
In terms of simplicity, I could see right away the disks missions were being governed by flight along railroad lines, not “as the crow flies”. And, although the vast majority of people reading this will not currently know other details about those cases, I’m positive that if you have read the cases it has always been perplexing that someone who saw a disk at 3 pm said the object was travelling south, and someone in the same city saw a disk at 3:10 and said the disk was travelling southwest, and yet another observer saw a disk at 3:20 and said the disk was travelling southeast. And, unfortunately, anyone reading those, then discounted those peoples observations as inaccurate. As you will see, they were highly accurate. And in a few cases, the observer may have guessed they were following railroad routes.
Let’s go over a few examples, so you can see how awesomely cool it is.
Clearwater, Tampa, St. Petersburg area, Florida
We’ll start with the sightings in the Tampa & Clearwater area of Florida. I’ll start with that section because that area had nothing to do with the Manhattan Project, but in terms of our military in 1947, that area is still important.
This map was created on Google Maps so it has modern roads including interstate roads, which did not exist in 1947. However, all of these sightings are in their correct position as they are from the addresses of the witnesses or the area of the sighting given in 1947. The sightings look random, of course. The numbers on each dot are the case number in the Report on the UFO wave of 1947. So while it isn’t clear on this map, the sightings are over a series of days, and in some cases the witnesses gave descriptions of the flight pattern.
These Clearwater sightings were just the beginning, but when I did the railroad overlay in Photoshop it was like being able to see something in a way that no one else ever had. It was an amazing feeling.
Same map but with abandoned rails put into it. Unfortunately the abandoned rails are very feint.
Naval Shipyard highlighted. MacDill Air Force Base highlighted.
As one can see from the maps, the disk sightings occur along the routes of the railroads.
Now imagine if the United States could fly a plane as fast as an F-22 to within a 1/2 mile of a Russian Strategic Air Base at a height of 2,000 – 4,000 feet. Imagine the level of detail a camera could capture.
Clearwater, Tampa, St. Petersburg area, Florida Part 2
As one can see there were 9 cases in and around the Tampa and Clearwater areas.
Here are the cases from the Summer 1947 excel spreadsheet for the Tampa area. I make alterations in my version of the spreadsheet, but I don’t see any changes in the below information. Therefore, you are looking at the raw data. The below are NOT listed in chronological order, but the order of how I view the map.

The air force bases are the blue icons.
Is it 100%
This consistency of the sightings occurring in and around the railways is going to be very consistent. However, in some cases I don’t know the exact address of the sighting and that interferes with whether there is consistency. Also, and this is the most important item to remember about the routing method:
It is just a means to an end.
The disks need to accomplish a mission, and that means they need to diverge then they will. However, the reason for diverging seems to be a technical one. Here are some seemingly reasons why some disks aren’t on a rail path.
- It has reached the end of a railroad line.
- There is no railway near the target.
- The disk is beginning its mission and so it is dropping into our atmosphere
- The disk is ending its mission and ascending to perform an unknown operation, that I guess is a form of refueling or disk pickup.
- The disk is being chased and needs to evade.
Moving on.
Sioux City, South Dakota
Let’s take a look at the sightings in and around Sioux City, South Dakota.

Again, without the railroad in the map, the sightings look mostly random. (Again, the interstate on this map because it is a modern map. The interstate did not yet exist in 1947.
The above map shows not only the cases but also the railroads within Sioux City. I’ve also put in notes about the flight patterns from the cases if known. Without the railroad information the flight pattern makes it seem like the disks are canvassing from multiple directions, but when the railroad route is used, it shows that the disks are using a very narrow pattern of movement and in the Sioux City cases always travelled thru the city and headed south.
The above map shows the rails on a modern map.
The below map shows a closer perspective of some of the cases and is more railroad centric.
“Unreliable” Clarion sighting
Let’s take a look at a sighting considered “unreliable”. This case shows what a difference it makes if the exact location is NOT known.
Case 112
29-Jun, 1947
4:45 PM CST
Clarion, Iowa
Driving on a highway in bus. Dale Bays of Crocker, Missouri, a bus driver saw four inverted saucers, the saw 13 inverted saucers. They were in loose groups, colored “dirty white” with dimensions of 200 feet wide and 12 foot height. The disks were at 1200 feet high. They had straight flight.
The four went South by Southeast. Then the thirteen went from South by Southeast to North by Northwest. It was sighting of a few minutes and he heard a motor sound.
Clarion did have an Air Force base that is now the Clarion Municipal Airport, but because the field is turf, I’m not sure the disks would gain any tactical advantage to examining.
Clarion is significant because at this time in 1947, Clarion is very much a minor hub for the railroad. 9 of the 12 companies have stations in Clarion, Iowa.
Below is the map of the major current railways into and out of Clarion. They are from SSW to NNE, NOT SSE to NNW.
Now showing Clarion with the abandoned rails. Rails were active in 1947.
The additional rails could be seen as going slightly Northwest from Clarion and going directly East. But the direction is West to East.
But if the Clarion sighting was on US Highway 50 near Clarion, then the sighting falls in line with other sightings following rails.
But because the sighting doesn’t fall perfectly in line with the railroads and because the sighting doesn’t affect whether the Manhattan Project sites that were seen, I don’t include the sighting for any more analysis.
Meridian, Mississippi
Let’s take a look at a simple sighting in Meridian, Mississippi.
Case 417
6-Jul Afternoon CST
The sighting was by Marty Fleming, Richard Fleming, Jack Berney, and
Floyd Massey. They were employees at Fleming’s Garage.
What they saw: Five Discs in a random formation. They were smaller than a “transport”, fast were flying near a transport flying over the area.
They estimated the disks at 10,000-12,000 ft up.
The flight pattern: Two went East. Two went South and One went Southeast.
Let’s take a look at the railways in Meridian from a wide view.
While it was not possible for me to find the exact location of Fleming’s Garage, no matter what part of the city Fleming’s would be the disk flight paths would, overall, follow the railways out of Meridian. While I would prefer the “two going East” to be two going northeast, the directions given are excellent considering the disks were considered to be 12,000 feet up.
In addition to the information about the disks, we need to look at whether Meridian has a military point of interest, which it did in 1947. The Key Air Force Base is located in Meridian.
They Field was Key Army Air Force Base and was a Joint usage Army/Navy base used during WW2.
Hopefully, by this point, one can see that the railroad is guiding the disk determination of what the next location is. On June 27, I will show an entire route of two disks, made possible by chronological and railroad route reconstruction.
What’s lost right now is the ultimate objective of the disks. The most pertinent mission of the disks is a survey and reconnaissance of the US nuclear capability in June 1947.
Part 2 will be launched on June 26th.
